Begum Festival brings together Awadhi culture, literature, art, music, and culinary traditions under one roof. A signature event in Lucknow’s cultural calendar, it has become a cherished tradition for Awadhi art and culture enthusiasts in Lucknow, India.

Season 3:Andaaz-e-Lucknow: The Swag of the City (December 2023)

The third season of the Begum Festival, a four-day celebration of Lucknow’s rich cultural heritage, began on December 22, 2023, at the picturesque Salempur Lawns. Organized by the Salempur Foundation and powered by LucknowPulse, the season’s theme, “Andaaz-e-Lucknow: The Swag of the City,” aimed at showcasing the unique charm and cultural elegance of Lucknow.

• The festival was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Abbas Ali Mahdi, Vice Chancellor of Era University, who lauded the efforts of the Salempur Foundation founders, Mr. Rushdi Hasan and Mrs. Asma Hasan, in preserving Lucknow’s heritage. • Dr. Roshan Taqui, a renowned historian, unveiled the theme and emphasized its significance in portraying Lucknow’s cultural uniqueness. • An engaging session featured Himanshu Bajpai, Lucknow’s beloved Dastango, and Qais Mujeeb, member of the Salempur Foundation, discussing the nuances of Andaaz-e-Lucknow.

•Literary Sessions: Diverse discussions on literature, heritage, and culture. •The Afsaana Nigaari Urdu short-story writing contest captivated audiences with the narration of the top three winning entries. •A literary session explored Lucknow’s cultural ethos, blending storytelling and discussions with artistic finesse.

The Begum Festival 2023 allowed the attendees to immerse themselves in Lucknow’s cultural vibrancy, blending literary finesse with artistic and culinary delights.

Season 2: Rooh-e-Lucknow (December 2022)

The Begum Festival 2022 Winter Edition (Season 2), organized by Salempur Estate and POSH by Asma Hasan, Powered by LucknowPulse, was a vibrant three-day event held at Salempur House, Qaiserbagh, Lucknow. Themed “Rooh-e-Lucknow: The Mohallas of the City”, the festival celebrated the cultural richness of Lucknow’s historic neighbourhoods through engaging activities, culinary delights, and artistic displays.

Sessions and Performances

•Sessions and Performances: Adity Chakravarti and historian Dr. Roshan Taqui guided audiences through nostalgic tales of Lucknow’s bylanes and heritage houses. Himanshu Bajpai, noted Dastango and author, entertained with his vibrant storytelling style, focusing on the famous Mohallas of Lucknow. A mesmerizing Mehfil-e-Tassawuf by the Ali Sufi Brothers captivated attendees with soulful qawwali. Other activities included storytelling (Qissagoi), a light and sound show, the Gulabo Sitabo puppet show, and youth and children-focused sessions.

Food and Shopping

The festival offered an eclectic mix of culinary experiences, from Awadhi delicacies and street-food chaat to Chowk’s Makkhan Malai and Turkish ice cream. Visitors also explored stalls featuring Kashmiri products, modern décor, and handcrafted items.

Cultural Impact

This second season was even more successful than its predecessor, taking visitors on a journey to the roots of Lucknow while blending tradition with modernity.

Season 1: The Beginning of a Legacy (March 2022)

Begum Festival – A Festival of Traditional Colours was a six-day celebration of literature, culture, cuisine, heritage, and art, held from March 25 to March 30, 2022, at Salempur House, Qaisar Bagh, Lucknow. Organized by Asma Hasan’s POSH and Salempur House and Powered by LucknowPulse, the festival featured an array of engaging activities, including talks, workshops, performances, and exhibitions.

The inaugural season of the Begum Festival was a grand showcase of Lucknow’s rich cultural tapestry. With captivating storytelling sessions, live performances, and workshops on traditional crafts, it set the tone for what would become an annual celebration of Awadhi Culture. Highlights included panel discussions with renowned authors and an exclusive evening of Awadhi music and poetry.
